Whether you truck needs a repair or you are looking to customize it, the parts necessary can add up in cost. Fortunately, there are several ways that you can save money without compromising quality. The following tips can help you find the best deal on the truck parts you want and need.

Tip #1: Do Your Research

This is especially true for custom parts, but necessary for every part you put into your truck. Check with several different vendors and manufacturer's of the part you need to find out what the average cost is. This way you know what to expect so you can avoid unnecessary mark-ups. This is especially true if you are purchasing used parts, since you don't want to overpay for something that isn't in pristine condition.

Tip #2: Know Potential Sources

Parts come in three basic varieties:

• OEM – these are "original equipment manufacturer" parts, which is what came stock on your vehicle.

• Aftermarket – these are parts produced by a different manufacturer than the stock manufacturer. Sometimes these parts are similar or even better in quality than stock, other times they aren't quite as good. You will need to do research to find out if an aftermarket part is a good option. When it comes to custom parts, aftermarket may also be the only option.

• Used – these are just what they sound like, parts that have come out of another vehicle. You can purchase these online, through some parts stores, or pull them yourself at a salvage yard.

Generally, used parts, especially if you pull them, are the least expensive option. Aftermarket parts can also provide cost savings in most cases, although sometimes the OEM part is a better deal if it works better or has a longer life.

Tip #3: Ask for a Discount

Some auto parts suppliers have discount or loyalty programs that will help you save on your parts purchase. A loyalty program may require nothing more than signing up and showing your membership card. There may even be a bulk discount program available, such as if you have a fleet of work trucks to maintain. If the parts store you are purchasing from has an online store as well as a brick-and-mortar establishment, make sure there aren't any online-only promotions or coupon codes that can save you money.

Tip #4: Buy in Bulk

Some truck parts require more frequent replacement than others. For example, your oil filter is likely getting changed at least once a year, if not more. You may be able to get a quantity discount if you purchase the filters by the box instead of individually as you need them. Another option is to simply buy a couple of extra of these necessary items when they go on sale. For example, if windshield wipers go on sale every summer, buy an extra set to keep in reserve for when you need them next.
